Headphones and Smash
After Spring Time a bunch of people asked me what I listen to in my headphones while playing in tournament, so here is my long-winded explanation.
Why?
I have a hard time tuning out background noise, especially noise with meaning, like people talking. Even if it’s irrelevant, I’ll end up thinking about what they’re saying, so I use noise canceling headphones to block it out. I don’t have game audio in my headphones, which means unless the TV volume is high I play without game audio. I practice this way as well, with no sound on emulator, which is convenient since I don’t have to deal with pj64k’s broken audio plugin. Occasionally people tell me this puts me at some huge disadvantage in terms of reaction time, which I’m skeptical of, but maybe I’m just really skilled to compensate, who knows. It is possible to have game audio in your headphones, but it requires plugging in a splitter and adapter to the console audio line.
Headphones
The headphones I use are the Sony WH-1000XM3s, which are fantastic. The XM4s are apparently better still. The XM5s are the newest, but for some reason don’t fold up for portability like their predecessors, so I wouldn’t recommend them for travel despite their sound quality. Bose competes with their QC line, which are also very good. I got mine “refurbished” (they were indistiguishable from brand new) for about $200. I’d recommend them if you travel a lot or work in an office even if you don’t plan to wear them in tournament.
Songs
Typically I’ll listen to one song on a loop for the entirity of a tournament. This has a bunch of advantages. For one, I don’t need to mess with audio controls at all, I never need to skip a song, or pick a song, or restart a playlist. It also minimizes distraction. I don’t want to suddenly be thinking about what song is starting in the middle of an edgeguard. After I hear a song a couple times, it’ll fade into the background and won’t take any attention away from the game. In terms of song selection, I pick mostly based on what song I like (usually hip hop or EDM), but I try to stick to songs that keep a consistent volume and tempo. At Spring Time I listened to Living Life in the Night by Hasan Aydın. At Smashtoberfest 2019, my best tournament ever, it was Summon The Fire by The Comet is Coming.
Conclusion
Hope this is interesting. To be honest, I’m a little in awe that people can play their best with no headphones at all, just raw crowd noise. On the other hand those people are probably amazed I can play without the game’s sounds. Experiement and let me know what works for you.
